Meeting the Danish Consul General

Today, 19th April 2017, Thessaloniki Association “The White Tower” represented by Mr Iakovos Garivaldis OAM, Vice-President of the Association along with Mr Tony Tsourdalakis, Secretary of Commemorative Council of the “Battle of Crete” and Mr Jim Claven, Secretary of Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee and historian, visited the Denmark House in Little Bourke Street Melbourne and met the Honorary Consul General of Denmark Mr Jan Ravnholt.

There are a number of reasons for this meeting, one being that of Danish Major Anders Lassen VC MC and his role in the liberation of Thessaloniki during WW2 from German occupation at the end of October 1944. In addition it was a good opportunity to get the two European origin communities, Hellenic and Danish, to meet for the first time and co-organise future co-operation and activities.

As it has been announced, Thessaloniki Association was to organise a Presentation Forum by Historian Mr Jim Claven in October 2017, highlighting the Liberation of Thessaloniki from the Germans in 1944 and more specifically to acknowledge the Allied Danish soldier Major Anders Lassen’s contribution. Major Lassen was a colorful and brave character to say the least, but lets wait for the actual Forum to learn more.

Consul General Ravnholt has received the three gentlemen showing great hospitality and appreciation. As a result and after the discussions that took place, there will be function organised which will be co-hosted by the two communities in Melbourne in November, final details to be announced soon. This function will be set as part of the umbrella of Sister-Cities Melbourne and Thessaloniki.

Σήμερα, 19 Απριλίου 2017, ο Αντιπρόεδρος της Ένωσης Θεσσαλονικέων “Ο Λευκός Πύργος” κ. Ιάκωβος Γαριβάλδης ΟΑΜ, μαζί με τους κ.κ. Τζιμ Κλάηβεν ιστορικό και Γραμματέα της Επιτροπής Λήμνος-Καλλίπολη, και Αντώνη Τσουρδαλάκη, Γραμματέα της Επιτροπής Μνήμης της “Μάχης της Κρήτης”, συναντήθηκαν με τον αξιότιμο Γενικό Πρόξενο της Δανίας στη Μελβούρνη κ. Γιαν Ράβχολτ στο Σπίτι της Δανίας στη Μελβούρνη, Little Bourke Street.

Ο κ. Γενικός δέχτηκε με μεγάλη χαρά και τιμή τους τρεις άνδρες. Ο λόγος της επίσκεψης αυτής είναι μια διάλεξη για την άγνωστη πτυχή της ιστορίας της Θεσσαλονίκης το 1944 και ιδιαίτερα τον Οκτώβριο όταν η πόλη απελευθερώθηκε από τον Γερμανό εισβολέα και τον ρόλο κάποιου Δανού Λοχαγού με το όνομα Άντερς Λάσσεν σ’ αυτή την απελευθέρωση.

Ο κ. Τζιμ Κλάηβεν πρόκεται να δώσει τη διάλεξη για το ιστορικό αυτό γεγονός στην Αγγλική τον Οκτώβριο κάτω από την ομπρέλα των εκδηλώσεων της Αδελφοποίησης Μελβούρνης με τη Θεσσαλονίκη. Την εκδήλωση διοργανώνουν από κοινού η Ένωση Θεσσαλονικέων και η Επιτροπή Μνήμης της “Μάχης της Κρήτης”. Περισσότερες λεπτομέρειες εντός του προγράμματος της Ένωσης σύντομα.
