Mothers’ Day Lunch 2025 – Thessaloniki Association

Today, Sunday 18th May 2025 and at 1:00pm Thessaloniki Association “The White Tower” has organised a complimentary lunch for all mothers, with live music, drinks and plenty of wonderful food at the club rooms on High Street Northcote.

More than sixty members and friends of the Association attended, making it a beautiful gathering. See the photos on this page for more information.

The program included live music to the three member band, the beautiful voice of Antonis Liras from “Odos Tsimiski”, bouzouki and instrumentals.

The President Paul Mavroudis OAM has mentioned the future events that will be organised by the Association in his speech, which included a free trip for members of the club to regional Victoria in November, a dinner at the end of October to commemorate the liberation of Thessaloniki and the function on September 14, about the Greeks of Asia Minor, which will be organised in co-operation with the Greek-Australian Cultural League of Melbourne.

The eldest and youngerst mothers on the day also received a bunch of flowers and a generous voucher, provided by the club, to use for their next shopping trip. We know how much mothers love their shopping.

During the luncheon Mrs Andrea Garivaldis, an educator and Principal of Zenon Greek School, has talked about the importance of mothers in everyone’s lives. Their contributions to our identity, their sacrifice and their big heart that forgives everything and asks for nothing.

We would like to thank all members who attended, Antonis with his wonderful traditional gastronomy, and our friends from other associations.

The Story of Kyriaki Tselepí

In 1922, the small village of Neochori in the region of Kallipolis, with the sea stretching out in front and the mountains protecting it from behind, experienced a great change. There lived the Mylonas family, a well-established household in the local community.

My grandfather’s family, on my mother’s side, was from the village of Krithia in Gallipoli, Eastern Thrace. They were a four-member family. My great-grandmother’s surname was Myropoulou, her first name was Xanthi, and she had siblings in America.

Thessaloniki 111 years later…

On October 26, 2023 Thessaloniki celebrates 111 years of freedom from the Ottoman Empire. Before that it was occupied for 482 years which due to the actions of the occupiers suppressed the freedom, activity, development and religious expression of its citizens. What about the longer history of this city?
