Mother’s Day 2023

Mother’s Day is a special holiday that is celebrated annually on the second Sunday in May in many countries around the world. This day is dedicated to honoring mothers and motherhood, and recognizing the important role that mothers play in our lives.

The history of Mother’s Day dates back to the early 20th century. It was first celebrated in 1908 by Anna Jarvis, who organized a memorial for her mother, Ann Jarvis, a social activist who had worked to improve healthcare and sanitation in her community. Anna Jarvis wanted to honour her mother’s legacy by creating a day to celebrate all mothers.

Over time, Mother’s Day became a popular holiday, and was eventually adopted by countries around the world. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated in over 40 countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and many countries in Europe and Asia.

On Mother’s Day, people often give gifts, cards, or flowers to their mothers to show their appreciation and love. Many families also gather together to have a meal or spend time together. In some countries, such as Mexico, Mother’s Day is celebrated with parades, music, and other festive events.

Here at Thessaloniki Association we’re honouring the mothers in our community by celebrating annually in May. This year we will be honouring all mothers on Sunday 21st May at our premises in Northcote. There will be food, flowers and gifts for mother members from the male population in our community. We’re very proud of them and feel very much indebted to them.

While Mother’s Day is a joyous occasion for many people, it can also be a difficult time for those who have lost their mothers or who have complicated relationships with their mothers. Some people also feel pressure to live up to certain expectations or to spend a lot of money on gifts or celebrations.

Despite these challenges, Mother’s Day remains an important holiday for all of us around the world. It is a time to reflect on the love and support that mothers provide, and to honour their sacrifices and hard work that mothers do every day to raise their children. Whether you celebrate Mother’s Day with a big party or a simple gesture of love and appreciation, it is a time to cherish the special bond between mothers and their children.

On the same day, we had the displeasure to say goodbye to one member of our Executive who served the Association as a Secretary General for many years. It was an emotional moment which was felt by all of us.
